This week I am in St Maarten…to relax and chill on the beach and by the pool.  WRONG!!!

I was on island to chase tarpon, and anything else that would bite.  So Sunday morning, I met up with Richard of Tyt Lynz Guide Service to see what was biting.

My last few experiences with guides have been mixed, but let me tell you.  If you are on St Maarten and need a professional, friendly, knowledgeable guide, reserve Richard.  He showed me a huge portion of the island, working from one beach to another, stalking my nemesis, the tarpon.  On one beach, we arrived and slowly drove down the shore looking for these beasts.  As we approached the far end, we noticed a pod of fish moving through the surf. After a few casts to stretch the muscles, I landed a nice cast in front of the pod and was rewarded with my first strike of the day.  As with my last trip to chase tarpon, I did not hook up on the first hit.  However a few casts later, I was rewarded with a nice take, strip set and listened to my real start singing.  As I started to work the fish I reached into my soggy pocket and tossed my camera to Richard to snap a few pictures.  “No worries, my digital camera is water proof,” so Richard got a few shots (sadly no jumps).  I wanted to sound deep and intellectual about stalking these silver devils, but all that comes to mind is “Take that...you mocked me in Florida…, but I have you now.”  After landing this nice fish, we chased the pod up and down the beach, getting several more bites and landing another nice fish.

Thanks Richard for showing me around the island, and hooking me up with some nice fish.  Next year I will be looking to you to show me the French side.

Tarpon everywhere! Every year, my wife and I (both avid anglers) take a caribbean trip to enjoy some warmth, sun - and fishing. I was doubtful of St Maarten as a fishing destination. Wow..! I was wrong. St. Maarten has it all - great island, fantastic food and hospitality and awesome fishing. Snook and tarpon are the main features and without a doubt Richard is the guide you want to have. He knows every trick and 'secret spot' on the island and works hard until you get into some action. And...he's a hoot to fish with too! Thank you Richard, we look forward to returning and fishing with you again. Colin and Mandey.

Richard, I just wanted to say Thank you for another memorable expierience.  Even though my goal of catching a snook was not achieved, I still enjoyed your company and fishing know how.  Every trip is a learning experience with you.  Still enjoyed the heck out of the tarpon fishing, which I am still amazed by everytime we go out.  I think my arm is going to love taking a break from all the fish we landed and had on.  Tight lines and I will be getting in touch with you in Febuary.  Thanks again!!

Where to begin... Let's start with the Island and the abundance of game fish. The numbers of tarpon I saw rolling about in the ponds and those I could see in the crystal clear ocean waters of the inlet were astounding!  It was a thing of beauty to be that close to these fascinating fish.  Moreover, I was quite impressed with how many spots there were to fish.  One does not readily think about St Maarten as being a mecca for big Tarpon, but believe me, it is.

St Maarten is an ideal fishing location for both the experienced angler as well as the beginner.  All will see action.  And while I do not fly fish, I can see that the locations where Richard took me would be perfect for fly casting.

·         About the fishing conditions for Tarpon.... they were perfect.  Inland, during the heat of the afternoon, was too warm so we went out at dusk and in the evening.  As the sun dropped, things got going as if a light switch had been turned on and there were many hits with magnificent jumps.  The cooler ocean allows for even longer fishing time.

·         About Richard..... I’ve been out with many guides/captains but I can say with total honesty that none were any more knowledgeable about the prey or any more successful at putting me on so many fish.  He knows all the hot spots, even the obscure ones. He knows what is biting, when they are biting why they are biting, and what they are biting on.  He is a true angling master of his Island.

As to his personal approach, I cannot say enough.  He was friendly, funny, informative, patient and always working for me to hook up.  He went WAY beyond what most guides would do in order for me to land my first Tarpon and I will be forever in his debt for this. I had no interest in mounting or eating Tarpon so we released.  But luckily enough, I had foul-hooked a Tilapia which I took back to the resort and ate.  Wife liked that.

·         Lastly, a small, indelicate matter…. Booking with Tyt Lynz was surprisingly affordable.  I got a huge “bang for my buck”.

For all of the above, there is no question: Next trip, I will again book with Tyt Lynz; this time, in search of a grand slam.

Thank you so much Richard.

Richard
Thanks for the wonderful experience. The fishing was great. We were able to learn a lot of thefiner details enabling us to locate and catch snook and bonefish.

The tarpon fishing has to be amongst the best places in the world.

Thanks for putting me in position to catch my Inshore Grand Slam (bonefish, snook, tarpon).

Looking forward to my next trip with you.

Give Richard a chance to show you that some of the best fishing is on the shores of St. Maarten.

Richard,

My two sons, my best friend and I agree that fishing with you was one of the highlights of our recent trip to St Maarten. The action was immediate and truly a great exposure to Tarpon fishing. If we ever make it back to St. Maarten we will definitely contact you for another outing.

Look me up if you make it to the States!

I just got back from another great trip to St Maarten. I fished with Richard on several occasions. On the last day of my trip I recorded a inshore grand slam. A tarpon, bonefish and snook. Richard put me onto the fish and recorded the last to legs of my quest. check below.  http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_edit?ns=1&video_id=j8o6jcQ8ho4&next=%2Fmy_videos

I have been fishing with Richard for the past three years. I have always caught fish. Not only caught fish but have caught snook up to 24 lbs. There is nothing like the scream of the drag and the bend in the rod on a glorious St Martin morning. I actually destroyed a reel last year on a huge snook. Going back April 1st for three great weeks. i highly reccommend Tyt Lynz guide service
